Beginning in 2012, Texas A&M University started a cutting edge research project studying the effects of Greenroof and Living Wall technology. Greenroofs and Living Walls are nothing more than vegetated landscapes planted on the rooftops or walls of buildings. Anecdotal evidence from rooftop gardens suggests the sites have positive environmental effects but little is known about the science. The TAMU research team has incorporated automated weather stations and meteorological sensors built and assembled by Met One Instruments to monitor the microclimates of the greenroof facility. The research team hopes to develop a better understanding of how greenroofs and a living walls can mitigate the detrimental effects flooding, urban heat islands, air pollution, and drought.
