China's polluted air may be affecting Fresno

San Joaquin Valley Air Quality Last weekend, the most corrosive air of summer descended on northwest Fresno — the kind of lung-searing day that would crack the rubber band on your newspaper if you left it on the driveway. The usual suspects in this kind of ozone siege are stifling heat, traffic and fires. It was a weekend, so commute pollution was not as bad. But Fresno was a stagnant 103 degrees, Sierra Nevada wildfires had burned for days and dirty air hung in the sweltering Valley. As bad as that sounds, it may not be the whole story, local air leaders say. Global pollution may be helping to create those dirty-air days. They say evidence points to plumes of pollution from China and eastern Asia, thousands of miles across the Pacific Ocean. The San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District has contributed about $200,000 to help study it. The research is led by federal agencies, such as NOAA and NASA, as well as the University of California at Davis..... ...

Rain And Climate Influenced By Dust And The Microbes That Ride On It Read more at http://www.redorbit.com/news/science/1113212766/rain-climate-influenced-by-dust-and-microbes-that-ride-on-it-081414/#reX5EPdlVdK4Fj26.99

Dusty air blowing across the Pacific from Asia and Africa plays a critical role in precipitation patterns throughout the drought-stricken western US. Today, a scientist will present new research suggesting that the exact chemical make-up of that dust, including microbes found in it, is the key to how much rain and snow falls from clouds throughout the region. This information could help better predict rain events, as well as explain how air pollution from a variety of sources influences regional climate in general. She will present a talk on how aerosols impact clouds and climate at the 248th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS), the world’s largest scientific society. The meeting is taking place here through Thursday and features nearly 12,000 scientific presentations. “We’ve learned that not all of the particles in the air at high altitudes have the same influence on clouds. We’re starting to think that these differences contribute to how r...

Taj Mahal to get a "mud pack" treatment

Taj Mahal, the monument of love, will get a 'mud-pack treatment' to give sheen to the white marble that has become pale owing to high levels of pollution. Met One Instruments' BAM 1020 monitoring on site  Taj Mahal, the monument of love, will get a 'mud-pack treatment' to give sheen to the white marble that has become pale owing to high levels of pollution. Officials blame air pollution, saying the Taj Mahal is encrusted with "suspended particulate matter," or granules of dirt and soot found in high levels in the air. "The deposition of SPM on the shimmering white marble of the Taj Mahal imparts yellow tinge to the marble surface," he said. To restore the monument to its pristine glory, the panel recommended packing it in mud, a process used on the Taj Mahal in the past. The treatment takes about two months and involves caking the domed edifice in mud and letting it dry before washing the clay off. As the mud dries, it absorbs...

Microclimate Weather Monitoring of the TAMU Greenroof

Beginning in 2012, Texas A&M University started a cutting edge research project studying the effects of Greenroof and Living Wall technology.  Greenroofs and Living Walls are nothing more than vegetated landscapes planted on the rooftops or walls of buildings.  Anecdotal evidence from rooftop gardens suggests the sites have positive  environmental  effects but little is known about the science.  The TAMU research team has incorporated automated weather stations and meteorological sensors built and assembled by Met One Instruments to monitor the microclimates of the greenroof facility.    The research team hopes to develop a better understanding of how greenroofs and a living walls can mitigate the detrimental effects flooding, urban heat islands, air pollution, and drought. For more information about this project and our meteorological sensors please visit the TAMU Greenroof blog at http://tamugreenroof.wordpress.com/about/ or con...
