SoDAR 101

With our recent acquisition of Atmospheric Systems Corporation we have started to receive questions asking about SoDAR technology and how wind profiling works. SoDAR is an acronym which stands for S onic D etection A nd R anging.  The term refers to an instrument which uses sound to measure wind speed and direction at altitudes up to 3,000 ft.  SoDAR operates by emitting a short sound pulse, then listening to the atmospheric echo from the pulse. The echo is a result of the continuous interaction between the outward propagation of acoustic energy and atmospheric turbulence. The echo, when received by the SoDAR is processed for its frequency content.  A change in frequency is associated with the turbulent movement of the atmosphere and the wind field above the SoDAR antenna.  Using the Doppler shift principles, the echo frequency of the pulse will be greater than the emission frequency if the movement of the wind field is toward the SoDAR antenna.  If the...

Operating a 30-megawatt solar farm from one PC

Reposted from CNET: Credit to:  Martin LaMonica  November 9, 2011 4:00 AM PST Original URL: http://news.cnet.com/8301-11128_3-57320569-54/operating-a-30-megawatt-solar-farm-from-one-pc/ During a road trip to the Southwest, CNET visits the 30-megawatt San Luis Solar Plant, which will have only two people managing a giant field of 110,000 high-efficiency solar panels. MOSCA, Colo.--Within a few days, Nick Thiel will take control of about 110,000 high-end solar panels pumping 30 megawatts of power onto the grid from a former potato and carrot farm. Thiel is operations manager of the San Luis Solar Ranch, a 300-acre facility in the San Luis Valley in southern Colorado, a high-desert area considered ideal for solar power generation. I visited the solar ranch during a week-long expedition of energy-related locations in New Mexico and southern Colorado organized by the Institutes for Journalism & Natural Resources. The SunPower solar panels, which cover 220 acres themselves, are...

Yuan Wang, a former doctoral student at Texas A&M, along with Texas A&M atmospheric sciences professors Renyi Zhang and R. Saravanan, have had their findings published in the current issue of Nature Communications. Satellite photo shows huge air pollution clouds at far left. Japan is on the right. (Photo: NASA JPL) Using climate models and data collected about aerosols and meteorology over the past 30 years, the researchers found that air pollution over Asia – much of it coming from China – is impacting global air circulations. “The models clearly show that pollution originating from Asia ...

Are You Ordering the Correct Instrument For Your Application?

Correct Instrument for the Best Results  Met One Instruments, Inc. manufactures a variety of particulate monitors for indoor/controlled environments and for outdoor ambient air.   Although we diligently ask the inquirer about the application, we don't always get the correct answer.  Misunderstood examples are our Aerocet models 531 and 831 Mass Monitors.  These models are used as indoor or controlled environment monitors.  They should not be used to monitor ambient air.  We often hear it does not correlate to the BAM 1020 or E-BAM.  They may be adjusted using the K-Factor, however, these are not recommended ambient air monitors.  Those wanting to monitor outdoors , please consider the BAM 1020 for regulatory requirements or the portable E-BAM and/or E-Sample r.

It also has captured attention in the Oregon Capitol with the introduction of House Bill 2710 and Senate Bill 524, which would set restrictions on the use of UAVs by law enforcement agencies, and Senate Bill 71, which w...

CLEAN FUEL FROM YUMA COUNTY, ARIZONA

Met One Instruments, Inc. and American Ecotech have supplied the air quality monitoring station and the meteorological sensors and tower to Arizona Clean Fuels – Yuma , ACFY. The installation of this equipment is a critical step for ACFY in obtaining their Class-1, Title-5, PSD Air Permit from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality. The air quality monitoring station includes two BAM-1020 ’s; one configured to measure PM10, the other configured to measure PM2.5. The meteorological tower is 100 feet tall and uses our 010C and 020C wind sensors, a triple-matched set of 062 differential temperature sensors and the 076B fan aspirated radiation shield.  A second class pyranometer and our 370 rain gauge are also being used on the ACFY site. Here are a few pictures of the Met One Instruments equipment installed at the site and a short video of the erection process of the 100-ft  meteorological tower.
