Why We Use Glass Fiber Filter Tape for Our PM Monitors.

Mr. Serie Jr. volunteers for Envicontrol at Pollutec 2013 and shows his enthusiasm for the MOI BAM 1020.

Met One Instruments, Inc. has extensively evaluated several types of Teflon (PTFE) filter tape for use with the BAM product line. As of now, we have never identified any Teflon filter that is superior to the regular glass fiber filter for the BAM application:

11)      The BAMs have a small spot size and a high flow rate. The resulting high pressure drop and high  face velocity is very difficult on the filter material.
22)      Glass fiber material is a depth filter which has extremely high filtration efficiency of greater than 99.999% down to .2 micron particles and even much smaller. Teflon membrane is a porous surface filter which is not as efficient and some particles get through.
33)      Glass fiber material can handle much higher filter spot dust loads before the airflow is restricted. Teflon sometimes blocks the airflow in concentrations lower than 100 ug.
4)       Pure Teflon membrane is too weak and too stretchy to be handled by the machine, so it must be laminated with a support backing of another material. This makes it cost more than three times as much as glass fiber.
55)     Teflon filter tape also does not seal with the nozzle and vane parts as well as the glass fiber material does, so the leak rate is significantly higher.  (by Mr. Dennis Hart, Product Engineer)
